Shoot report from the 2010 Friendly Open

Over fifty archers from as far afield as Lincolnshire, Littlehampton and London descended on the Isle of Wight for a Friendly two day Open shoot, hosted by the Wight Company of Field Archers on 4th and 5th September.

Archers gathered on Saturday to shoot a challenging mixture of 2d and 3d animal targets, shot in beautiful private woodland near Brading.  The club’s catering team was on hand to provide bacon rolls for breakfast, followed by a lunchtime BBQ then afternoon tea and homemade cakes.

2010_Open_pic_42After shooting two rounds of twenty targets, the visitors were transported to the Roebeck Campsite near Ryde where they were invited to try out SPTA archery activities including popinjay, speed and barrel shooting plus knife and axe throwing.

As night descended, the group were treated to a fireshow from a local extreme performance group and songs round the campfire.

Sunday morning brought the drizzle but this did not dampen enthusiasm for a second day of archery, this time on a Bow Hunting Theme – one arrow, one shot, one peg!   The sun came out in time for lunch consisting of local roast venison served in pitta bread with all the accompaniments, again provided by the hardworking catering team.

As final scores were counted, the tired but happy participants supped tea and ate more cake.  Those with the highest scores in each bow class were then rewarded with medals.

Here are just some of the comments we have received about the event : -

Hi, just want to thank you for a really good weekend shoot, we really enjoyed ourselves and had the opporunity to spend the rest of the week on the Island... Once again thankyou for a good weekend ...

Thanks for a really good weekend; both my brother and I could not believe how you could have so much fun for only fifteen pounds - amazing! I will certainly nick some of great medieval games ideas for use at our own events.  I really enjoyed the knife throwing, great method of noisy archer control.  It was made even better by being in a nice group of people.

Hi just like to say what a good shoot you put on last week, I will definitely see you next year - cheers.....

Just wanted to say thanks again to you and all the crew for a fantastic weekend shoot, we will see you in the New Year if not before...
